Phil Capen was born in 1940 and grew up in the northern Michigan, where he learned the basics in art from his father. In 1970 he studied under Charles Hawes (AWS) in the West Indies. During that same year he launched his career as an artist. Having formerly pursued his careers in industrial chemistry and teaching, Capen then devoted himself to painting as his full time job. He now resides with his wife Rosemary, on the coast of Central Florida, and spends several months each year at a second home in Green Turtle Cay, Abaco, Bahamas.

Capen is best known for his paintings of natural landscapes. Most of his work is currently being produced in Florida and in the Bahamas Out Islands, with a few pieces reflecting other travels and interest. Capen’s art has won many awards, and is included in hundreds of private and public collections. A list of significant awards, exhibitions and public collections is available upon request. He is an exhibiting member of the American Artist Professional League, Inc., the International Society Of Marine Painters, the Florida Watercolor Society, and the Miami Watercolor Society.

Many of Capen’s watercolors have been produced as Limited Edition Prints and giclees. Phil Capen Art has all of Phil’s available prints and Lighthouse Giclees is the sole publisher of his current work.
